burkitt’s lymphoma is the most common childhood cancer in uganda. it is caused by infection from the epstein-barr virus, which causes certain white blood cells to grow out of control. not only does this cause enlarged nodes and growths in the head and neck but it also causes the child to have poor immune responses to infections. though burkitt’s lymphoma is a very aggressive cancer, if it is caught early is highly curable. burkitt’s lymphoma accounts for 85% of the pediatric patients at the uganda cancer institute. almost 100% of children with this disease will die without appropriate therapy. however, if chemotherapy and radiation therapy are provided, approximately 90% can be cured and can go on to lead full and effective lives. unfortunately, a curative course of chemotherapy with radiation therapy for burkitt’s lymphoma averages $800. most people in uganda survive on a dollar a day or less, and thus these costs are prohibitive. however, for many in resource-abundant countries, these costs are affordable either through charitable giving or purchase of quality products. wrap up africa seeks to create a sustainable fund through profits and a charitable foundation (in the filing process) to help defer the costs of chemotherapy and hospitalization for the patients. we train parents and guardians displaced from their jobs to create the quality products we sell in the resource-abundant world. it is our hope that by offering an opportunity to earn funds and offering support for chemotherapy costs more parents will allow their children to remain at the hospital, thus increasing the numbers of completed treatments and cures.
